Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

To be salt and light: is it an impossible task?

Dear brothers and sisters, Fiat!

These Sundays we are reading some passages from the “Sermon on the Mount”: Jesus’ teachings,  which are gathered as to chart the program of His subsequent work. In today’s passage (Mt 5:13-16), Jesus calls his disciples “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” What does it mean? Maybe someone remembered the passage from the prophet Isaiah (58:7- 10), which is proposed again today as the first reading: “Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter when you see the naked, to clothe them, then your light will break forth like the dawn; If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday”. In short, the Prophet says to act in accordance with justice and charity, and Jesus simply meant that.

To be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, is to give flavor, ie a sense, a higher purpose, to the reality that however many people live as demeaning because they suffered because of them or they consider them to be insignificant; it means giving light to the soul of those who are desperate,  of those who are blind or simply asleep, and for this reason they do not see the good which exists around them, or that they can accomplish.

The task that Jesus entrusted to His disciples appears to be great and exciting, but difficult; Indeed, those who have conscience of their limits are tempted to believe that it’s impossible. Here, however, the second reading. The apostle Paul also felt inept to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world; but nevertheless he didn’t refrain from doing what he could do to bear witness concerning the One who sent him. In this regard, he wrote: “And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.”  (1 Corinthians 2:1-5)

It is difficult to present and especially to experience the cross as our ideal of life. So it was also for Luisa, but when we experience the cross, Jesus also gives us light to know it deeply and understand,  even in sorrow, the great treasure of suffering.

One day Luisa wrote what Jesus taught her about the cross just in a really difficult time for her, because of the death of her mother and the sudden illness of her father that after a few days lead to his death.

Jesus explained to Luisa that the cross is a thorny fruit, which is bothering and prickly on the outside, but once the thorns and the cortex are removed, one finds a precious and delicious fruit. But only one who has the patience to bear the bothers of the prickings, can arrive at discovering the secret of the preciousness and flavor of that fruit. And only one who has come to discover this secret, looks at it with love, and goes in search of this fruit with avidity, without caring about the prickings, while all the others look at it with contempt, and despise it.

At those words Luisa was troubled and wanted to Know from Jesus the secret contained in the fruit of the cross. And Jesus said to her that it is the secret of eternal beatitude, because in the fruit of the cross there are many little coins which circulate only to enter into Heaven, and with these little coins the soul is enriched and makes herself blessed for eternity.

The behavior of the apostle seem humanly unwise almost self-defeating. Instead, as  he continues to explain in the letter, in doing so, we  can see that in reality faith does not arise from someone’s speeches: it arises from “God’s power”.

The apostle, missionary, priest, catechist, the mother who teaches prayers to her child, and all those who try to bear witness to the gospel by word and example, “must” be conscious of being weak and must face the task “with fear and trembling”; but this must not prevent them from realizing that they are only a tool in the hands of God: It’s God Alone Who can penetrate into men’s minds and hearts. Therefore, every Christian can be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, not through his own capacities, or any sort of talents, merits and privileges, but because it is God who, in reality, works through him.

First Saturday Meditation: Blasphemies against Our Lady’s Virginity

Our Lady of the Rosary PortraitOn the 4th February 2017, we will celebrate the second of the Five First Saturdays in reparation to Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart.  This month we will meditate on the second blasphemy that Our Lord listed which is the attacks, or disbelief, on Our Lady’s Virginity.  

From its very beginnings, the Church has always believed in Our Lady’s perpetual virginity before, during and after Child birth.  Indeed, the Church refers to Our Lady under the ancient title of the Aeiparthenos or the Ever – Virgin Mary (cfr. CCC 499).

Before and During Childbirth
How is it possible that the Church declares that Mary was a Virgin both before and during Childbirth?  In first place, we can review the words of the Scriptures.  The prophecy of Isaiah announcing the birth of the Messiah said, “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call his name Emmanuel” (Is 7:14).  The prophet says that “the Virgin shall conceive” and then adds “and bear a Son”.  The sign of the Messiah is the pregnant and child bearing Virgin.  Our Lady’s Virginal integrity was not compromised when she conceived and gave birth to her Son.

However, perhaps even more compelling is the testimony of Mary herself who asks the Angel how the conception of her Son will take place as, “I have no knowledge of man” (Lk 1:34) or, in other words, because she is a Virgin.

maria antonello di MessinaA sermon from the Council of Ephesus explains how it is possible for Our Lady to be a Virgin even when giving birth:

“Whosoever brings forth mere flesh, ceases to be a virgin. But since she gave birth to the Word made flesh, God safeguarded her virginity so as to manifest His Word, by which Word He thus manifested Himself: for neither does our word, when brought forth, corrupt the mind; nor does God, the substantial Word, deigning to be born, destroy virginity.” (Council of Ephesus (P. III, Cap. ix))

Mary remained a Virgin after the birth of the Lord

The Church teaches Our Lady remained a Virgin even after the birth of the Lord.  Those who doubt this truth frequently cite the “brothers” of Jesus mentioned in St Mathew’s Gospel (Mt 12:46; 13:55-56) or the fact that Mary gave birth to her “first born Son” (Mt 1:24-25).  These objections are simply explained because in ancient Hebrew there was no word for cousin and so “brother” was used to relate to cousins, fellow countrymen or even close friends.  It did not necessarily mean that they were blood brothers.  In Israel, the “first born” was offered to the Lord but it did not imply that there was necessarily a second child.  Perhaps this is clearly highlighted at the foot of the cross when Our Lord asks St John to take care of His Mother ( Jn 19:26-27) because if there were other children they would have taken care of Our Lady.

The importance of this doctrine
The importance of Mary’s perpetual virginity comes to the fact that it is intrinsic to the Lord’s Incarnation.  God could have become man in any way he chose.  However, God chose be born of a virgin.  It is a sign that emphasises the absolute initiative of God in bringing about man’s Salvation.

What are the blasphemies against Our Lady’s Virginity for which we are to offer reparation?

immaculate heart1.    Refusal to accept that Our Lord was born of a Virgin
2.    Refusal to accept that Our Lady remained a Virgin during and  after child-birth.
3.    Erroneous belief that Our Lady had other children
4.    Refusal to belief that Our Lady and St Joseph lived a virginal marriage
5.    Refutation that Our Lady preserved the inner sanctorum of the Most High

Ways to Make Reparation to Our Lady’s Immaculate heart

Offer this first Saturday in reparation for the blasphemies against Our Lady’s perpetual virginity.

Meditate on St Augustine’s celebrated teaching: “Mary remained a virgin in conceiving her Son, a virgin in giving birth to Him, a virgin in carrying Him, a virgin in nursing Him at her breast, always a virgin” (Serm 186, 1)

The “Letter to the Hebrews” speaks to us of Jesus Christ, the only mediator of the new covenant  ” For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant” (Hebrews 9:15).

Only Jesus Christ conquered death and gave us His divine life which is eternal.

He, as God, became like us  “to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself” (Hebrews 9:26). “ So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him” (Hebrews 9:28).

Unlike the priests of the Old Covenant, Jesus is both Priest and Victim. In His Passion He – as pure from every stain of sin –  gave himself to the Father for sinners. By means of His death and resurrection He accomplishes his priestly function; At the Ascension He didn’t enter into a temple built by human hands, but  He entered into heaven, where He remains a Lamb standing before the Father to make intercession for us (Rev 5:6).  Sin is  now deprived of  its strength  and  a “new way” to return to the Father is open to everyone.

The Gospel of Mark presents Jesus as the One before whom we must take a stand: either we join ourselves to Him, our only Savior or we compare ourselves to Him in the exercise of our freedom that rejects Him.

Salvation is a gift, but it can be given only to those who have the desire to be saved.

The servant of God “Luisa Piccarreta” had the desire to be saved. For this she fully adhered to the will of Jesus, obedient servant to the Father even unto death, even the death of the cross. In the Hours of the Passion Luisa comments on the agony of Gethsemane in the following way: “O Jesus, all the rebellions of creatures advance toward You; You see that “Fiat Voluntas Tua”, that “Your Will be done”, which was to be the life of each creature, being rejected by almost all of them, and instead of finding life, they find death. And wanting to give life to all, and make a solemn reparation to the Father for the rebellions of creatures, as many as three times, You repeat: “Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from Me: that souls, withdrawing from Our Will, become lost. This chalice is very bitter for Me; however, not my will, but Yours be done”.

Jesus bound the human will with the divine will making His own person a bridge, a bond of harmony. And this is precisely the starting point of our new life, to be in Christ, with Christ, through Christ.

In another excerpt from the Hours of the Passion Jesus tells Luisa: My daughter, do you want to know what it is that torments Me more than the very executioners? Rather, those are nothing compared to this! It is the Eternal Love, which, wanting primacy in everything, is making Me suffer, all at once and in the most intimate parts, what the executioners will make Me suffer little by little. Ah, daughter, it is Love which prevails in everything, over Me and within Me. Love is nail for Me, Love is scourge, Love is crown of thorns – Love is everything for Me. Love is my perennial passion, while that of men is in time. Ah, my daughter enter into my Heart, come to be dissolved in my love, and only in my love will you comprehend how much I suffered and how much I loved you, and you will learn to love Me and to suffer only out of love.”

Luisa lived immersed in the love of Jesus Christ and learned to love God and her neighbor, declaring herself the ‘little daughter of the Divine Will “.

Dearly beloved, it’s really a gift to know and love Jesus as the Servant of God Luisa Piccarreta did. Let us imitate her harmonizing our day in this way: “Today, in your Divine Will, come Jesus to love in me the people I meet, to walk in my steps,  to look with my eyes, to work in my hands,  to talk in my words , etc “.

Jesus made this possible by giving us His Divine Life.
